This review examines VAPolyMT, a versatile bi-timbral polyphonic synthesizer compatible with iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It incorporates an analog-inspired step sequencer for each timbre and offers assignable macro controls, providing flexible real-time modulation options. The software operates both as a standalone application—with support for Ableton Link, MIDI, and audio file export—and as an AudioUnit Extension (AUv3), ensuring broad integration within various digital audio workstations.

The synthesizer architecture comprises two oscillators, a mixer, resonant low and high pass filters, and an amplifier for each voice. Users can layer or split these synthesizers to create complex textures. Built-in effects include delay, chorus, flanger, reverb, equalization, and compression, enhancing sound design possibilities. The integrated sequencer features a piano roll editor and supports parameter automation. Project files can be stored in iCloud Drive, enabling seamless access across devices.

Recent improvements enhance the user experience by adding support for MIDI foot pedals (CC#11, CC#64) and MIDI 2.0 per-note control messages. Additionally, CC settings are saved automatically and restored upon app relaunch.

System requirements specify iOS 17.0 or later and macOS 14.0 or later; devices with Apple Silicon are highly recommended for optimal performance. Users with lower CPU specifications should consider reducing the number of voices to prevent sound distortion. The AUv3 extension necessitates a host app that supports AudioUnit extensions; compatibility is confirmed with Apple’s Logic and GarageBand on both iOS and macOS, while support in other DAWs may vary depending on application capabilities.
